Explanation of precautions when using electrosurgical unit

Electrosurgical Unit is a device that almost every surgeon will come into contact with. When using it, the following points should be noted:

1. Have an understanding of the principles of ESU cutting and coagulation.

2. When using a electrosurgical unit, do not select the wrong mode. For example, do not choose the cutting and coagulation modes incorrectly.

If you choose the cutting mode during coagulation, it will cause tissue cells to burn and die.

3. When using a certain electrosurgical unit for the first time, due to a lack of understanding of its performance. It should be adjusted according to the principle of increasing power from small to large. Excessive power can easily increase the local tissue current, and excessive temperature can cause tissue damage.

4. Do not perform repeated coagulation procedures for larger bleeding points, as this can also cause damage to cellular tissues.

5. When cutting the fat layer. Due to poor blood supply to adipose tissue and sensitivity to heat, repeated electrocoagulation is prone to liquefaction and necrosis, resulting in difficult or slow wound healing.

6. When using a electrosurgical unit, the operator uses hemostatic forceps to clamp the bleeding point, and then the electric pencil tips comes into contact with the hemostatic point. This can cause the operator's fingers to be injured due to the breakdown of the latex gloves caused by the high voltage of the radio frequency.
